About Atorship-10 Tablet

Atorship-10 Tablet contains Atorvastatin Calcium equivalent to Atorvastatin 10 mg, an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) used to lower LDL cholesterol and reduce cardiovascular risk. The 10 mg strength is the standard starting dose for primary hypercholesterolaemia and primary cardiovascular prevention in moderate-risk adults.

Statins are the cornerstone of lipid-lowering therapy and one of the most evidence-based classes in cardiology. Beyond their LDL-lowering effect (typically 35–40% at 10 mg), atorvastatin also produces modest reductions in triglycerides and increases in HDL, and has pleiotropic anti-inflammatory and plaque-stabilising effects on atherosclerotic vessels — translating into significant reductions in myocardial infarction, stroke and cardiovascular mortality.

Mechanism of Action

Atorvastatin competitively inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in hepatic cholesterol biosynthesis. The resulting reduction in intracellular cholesterol upregulates hepatic LDL receptors, which clear circulating LDL particles from plasma. Additional pleiotropic effects include endothelial function improvement, plaque stabilisation, anti-inflammatory action and reduced thrombogenicity.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: 10 mg once daily, at any time of day, with or without food. Titrate up to 20–80 mg based on lipid response. Re-assess lipids after 4–6 weeks.

Side Effects

Myalgia, mild GI upset, headache, raised liver enzymes. Less common: rhabdomyolysis (rare but serious — monitor for muscle pain with dark urine), elevated HbA1c/new-onset diabetes, sleep disturbance. Drug-drug interactions: caution with macrolides, fibrates, gemfibrozil, ciclosporin (myopathy risk).

Contraindications & Precautions

Hypersensitivity to atorvastatin. Active liver disease, persistent ALT elevation > 3× ULN. Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Concomitant strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (itraconazole, telithromycin, HIV protease inhibitors). Caution: renal impairment, hypothyroidism, history of myopathy, alcoholism.
