Mechanism of Action
Levosalbutamol (R-salbutamol enantiomer) is a selective beta-2 adrenergic agonist providing bronchodilation with less tachycardia than racemic salbutamol. Ipratropium is a short-acting muscarinic antagonist (SAMA) producing complementary bronchodilation by blocking parasympathetic bronchoconstriction. Combined provides faster and more sustained bronchodilation than either alone.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: 1 respule nebulised every 6 hours (acute) or twice daily (maintenance).
Side Effects
Tachycardia, tremor, hypokalaemia, dry mouth (Ipratropium), nervousness.
Contraindications & Precautions
Hypersensitivity, severe cardiovascular disease, hyperthyroidism, narrow-angle glaucoma (Ipratropium).
