About Cefiza-S Tablet

Cefiza-S Tablet pairs Cefixime 200 mg with Sulbactam 150 mg — an alternative to clavulanate-based combinations for restoring activity against beta-lactamase-producing bacteria. Sulbactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor with its own intrinsic activity against Acinetobacter species, making it particularly valuable in selected hospital-related infections.

Like cefixime+clavulanate, this combination extends spectrum to penicillinase-producing H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis, E. coli and many anaerobes. Some prescribers prefer sulbactam combinations due to lower GI side-effect profile vs clavulanate.

Cefiza-S is manufactured by Trumac Healthcare under WHO-GMP conditions. Available for monopoly-based PCD pharma franchise and third-party manufacturing — a high-value specialty antibiotic SKU.

Indications

  • Acute pharyngitis and tonsillitis (streptococcal)
  • Acute otitis media
  • Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis
  • Uncomplicated UTI and cystitis
  • Uncomplicated gonorrhoea (single dose)
  • Typhoid fever (uncomplicated)
  • Beta-lactamase-producing bacterial infections
  • Selected Acinetobacter infections (specialist use)
  • Recurrent infections with prior antibiotic exposure

Mechanism of Action

Cefixime binds penicillin-binding proteins (PBP-3) on gram-negative bacteria, inhibiting the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis. The result is bacterial cell wall destabilisation and osmotic lysis. Cefixime is resistant to many beta-lactamases produced by gram-negative organisms — distinguishing it from earlier cephalosporins. Sulbactam is a competitive beta-lactamase inhibitor that prevents enzymatic destruction of cefixime, restoring activity against resistant organisms.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: 1 tablet twice daily for 5–10 days.

Side Effects

Diarrhoea (relatively common), nausea, abdominal pain, mild skin rash. Less common: hypersensitivity reactions, transient elevation of liver enzymes. Rare: pseudomembranous colitis, severe skin reactions, anaphylaxis. Generally better GI tolerance than clavulanate combinations.

Contraindications & Precautions

Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins. Severe penicillin allergy (cross-reactivity ~10%). Renal impairment requires dose adjustment. History of GI disease (caution). Hypersensitivity to sulbactam.

Storage

Store below 30 °C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture.
