About Bupivon-Heavy Injection

Bupivon-Heavy Injection contains Bupivacaine 5 mg/ml in a hyperbaric (heavy) preparation — the standard agent for spinal (intrathecal) anaesthesia in lower-abdominal, gynaecological, urological, orthopaedic and lower-limb surgery. The ‘heavy’ designation indicates added dextrose 8%, which makes the solution denser than CSF, allowing controlled spread by patient positioning.

Bupivacaine provides 1.5–3 hours of surgical anaesthesia with reliable motor and sensory block, making it the global anaesthesia workhorse for caesarean section, hernia repair, hip/knee surgery, prostatectomy and similar procedures. The hyperbaric form is particularly favoured for controlled segmental anaesthesia.

Bupivon-Heavy is manufactured by Trumac Healthcare under WHO-GMP injectable conditions. Available for monopoly-based PCD pharma franchise, government tenders and third-party manufacturing — a high-volume hospital and surgical SKU.

Indications

  • Spinal anaesthesia for caesarean section
  • Lower-abdominal surgery (hernia repair, appendicectomy)
  • Urological surgery (TURP, prostatectomy)
  • Orthopaedic lower-limb surgery (hip, knee, ankle)
  • Gynaecological procedures (hysterectomy, dilation and curettage)

Mechanism of Action

Bupivacaine reversibly binds voltage-gated sodium channels on neuronal membranes, blocking sodium influx and preventing depolarisation/action potential propagation. In the subarachnoid space it produces dense sensory and motor block of spinal nerve roots, providing surgical anaesthesia for procedures below the level of block.

Dosage & Administration

Spinal anaesthesia: 1.5–4 ml (7.5–20 mg) intrathecally depending on procedure and patient. Strictly hospital use by trained anaesthesiologists.

Side Effects

Hypotension (sympathetic block), bradycardia, nausea, post-dural puncture headache. Serious: total spinal block, cardiac toxicity at very high systemic doses, respiratory depression. Local nerve injury rare.

Contraindications & Precautions

Hypersensitivity to amide local anaesthetics. Severe hypotension, cardiogenic shock. Coagulopathy or anticoagulant therapy (relative). Local infection at injection site. Severe spinal deformity. Septicaemia. Increased intracranial pressure.

Storage

Store below 25 °C, protected from light. Do not freeze.
