Mechanism of Action
Roxithromycin is a semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic — binds 50S bacterial ribosome inhibiting protein synthesis. Active against gram-positive aerobes, atypicals (Mycoplasma, Chlamydia, Legionella), and selected anaerobes. Better GI tolerance than erythromycin.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: 150 mg twice daily or 300 mg once daily for 5–10 days.
Side Effects
GI upset, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, headache, hepatic enzyme elevation. Drug interactions via CYP3A4 inhibition.
Contraindications & Precautions
Hypersensitivity to macrolides, on ergotamine, severe hepatic disease, QT prolongation.
