About Nifurant-100 SR Tablet
Nifurant-100 SR Tablet contains Nitrofurantoin 100 mg in SR form — first-line antibiotic for uncomplicated lower UTI (cystitis) per WHO and IDSA guidelines. Concentrates in urine to bactericidal levels with minimal resistance after 50+ years of use.
SR formulation allows twice-daily dosing vs four-times daily for immediate-release. Preferred over Fluoroquinolones for uncomplicated UTI due to lower collateral resistance.

Mechanism of Action
Nitrofurantoin is activated by bacterial nitroreductase to reactive intermediates that damage bacterial DNA, ribosomes, and metabolic enzymes. Concentrates 50x in urine vs serum — making it ineffective for pyelonephritis but excellent for cystitis. Low CRR (collateral resistance).
Dosage & Administration
Adults: 100 mg SR twice daily x 5–7 days for UTI; 50–100 mg at bedtime for prophylaxis.
Side Effects
Nausea, GI upset (take with food), pulmonary toxicity (acute hypersensitivity + chronic interstitial pneumonitis with long-term use), peripheral neuropathy, hepatotoxicity (rare).

Renal impairment (CrCl <30 ml/min — accumulates), G6PD deficiency, pregnancy at term (38–42 weeks), infants <1 month, pyelonephritis.
