Mechanism of Action
Furosemide inhibits the Na+/K+/2Cl- cotransporter in the thick ascending loop of Henle, producing potent natriuresis and water loss but also kaliuresis. Spironolactone competitively antagonises aldosterone at the distal tubule mineralocorticoid receptor, reducing sodium reabsorption and potassium loss. The combination achieves diuresis with relative potassium preservation.
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: 1 tablet once daily in the morning, or as advised
- Reduce dose in elderly
- Monitor electrolytes (especially potassium) and renal function periodically
- Take with breakfast
