Mechanism of Action
Ambroxol breaks disulphide bonds within acid mucopolysaccharide fibres of bronchial mucus, reducing mucus viscosity. It stimulates type-II pneumocytes to secrete pulmonary surfactant, lowering alveolar surface tension. It also enhances ciliary beat frequency, accelerating mucociliary transport and easing expectoration.
Dosage & Administration
- Infants up to 2 years: 1 ml twice daily.
- Children 2–5 years: 1.25 ml three times daily.
- Children 6–12 years: 2.5 ml two to three times daily.
- Use the calibrated dropper provided.
- To be given as advised by a paediatrician.
Side Effects
- Generally well tolerated.
- Possible mild GI upset, nausea, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea.
- Rare: hypersensitivity reactions, skin rash, mucosal reactions (Stevens-Johnson, TEN — very rare).
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ambroxol or bromhexine.
- Use with caution in severe hepatic or renal impairment.
- Avoid concomitant antitussives (which suppress cough and prevent mucus expectoration).
- Discontinue at first sign of skin lesion or mucosal reaction.

Store below 30 °C in a dry place, protected from light.
