Mechanism of Action
Racecadotril is a prodrug hydrolysed to thiorphan, which inhibits enkephalinase. This prolongs the action of endogenous enkephalins on intestinal opioid receptors, reducing intestinal hypersecretion without affecting motility.
Dosage & Administration
- Children: 1.5 mg/kg three times daily for up to 7 days.
- Adults: 100 mg three times daily.
Side Effects
- Generally well tolerated.
- Occasional rash.
- Rare hypersensitivity.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity.
- Bacterial dysentery with fever (use only after assessment).
