Mechanism of Action
Cetirizine selectively antagonises peripheral H1 histamine receptors, preventing histamine-mediated vasodilation, vascular permeability and sensory nerve stimulation. Minimal CNS penetration compared with first-generation antihistamines limits sedation.
Dosage & Administration
- Children 2–6 years: 2.5 ml once daily or 1.25 ml twice daily.
- Children 6–12 years: 5 ml once daily or 2.5 ml twice daily.
- Children > 12 years: 10 ml once daily.
- As advised by paediatrician.
Side Effects
- Mild drowsiness (more than newer agents like bilastine), dry mouth, headache, fatigue.
- Rare hypersensitivity.
