Mechanism of Action
Cephalexin binds penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) on bacterial cell walls, inhibiting the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis. The resulting weakened cell wall causes osmotic lysis of actively dividing organisms. As a first-generation cephalosporin, activity is best against gram-positive organisms.
Dosage & Administration
- Children: 25–50 mg/kg/day in four divided doses.

- Refrigerate after reconstitution.
Side Effects
- GI upset, diarrhoea, nausea, mild rash.
- Rare: pseudomembranous colitis, anaphylaxis, severe skin reactions.
- Cross-reactivity with penicillin allergy (~10% risk).
